In an elaborative und scientifically guided process a working group consisting of researchers from the whole Helmholtz Association (Helmholtz Incubator Information & Data Science) proposed a strategic approach for AI, leading to the concept of the 'Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit' (HAICU), which aims to reach an international leadership position in applied AI by combining AI-based analytics with Helmholtz’ unique research questions and data sets.
- develop and implement novel AI methods, including contributions to the theoretical basis of AI, motivated by concrete research questions and apply them in use cases across multiple Helmholtz Centers,
- provide support for applied AI activities for users in the various Helmholtz Centers and disseminate emerging methods in the field, and
- identify and leverage similarities between applications across different topics. HAICU will have practical impact in the research fields and Helmholtz Centers as an enabler of applied AI-based research activities, with the development and distribution of AI methods across all Helmholtz Centers.
HAICU will be structured in a wheel-and-spoke model, with an interdisciplinary international visible central unit located at Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) and strong local units located at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
These principal partners will shape HAICU to the benefit of the whole Helmholtz Association and will significantly enrich the Helmholtz Association in terms of applied AI. It will bring together scientists from all centers, provide support in their needs and thereby will foster transdisciplinary and ground-breaking research.
